Catalpa Oaks County Park is currently closed. Construction is in the early stages of earth work and renovations are expected to be completed next spring with intermittent closures anticipated in the following year to allow for turf growth. Improvements underway include an additional picnic shelter, accessible pathways, a playground expansion and a paved parking lot.

The northwest corner of David H. Shepherd Park in Oak Park – which will reopen in 2026 as Oak Park Woods – closed in April. New amenities under construction include a restroom building, gathering and seating areas and a play area.

 Construction Update

The fishing pier and boat launch are currently closed. The playground and restrooms will remain open, seasonally, throughout the duration of construction. Construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2026. Please follow our Facebook page for updates.

The park initially partially reopened at the end of July, and the playground and disc golf course are ready for visitors to enjoy. Portions of the park are still closed for construction, including the fishing pier, boat launch and horseshoe pits. The original scope of the project, which included accessible pathways, nature-based play pockets, improved lake views and a new pavilion, is nearing completion. Additional items were recently approved by the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission, and construction on those amenities is slated to begin in Spring 2026.

The former Ambassador Park area has been incorporated into the Red Oaks complex and is currently closed. Construction is underway and the area will reopen as the Red Oaks Play Garden in 2026. New amenities in the works include a brand-new playground and tot garden, hammocks, a shade structure with porch swings and attached restroom building, a redesigned parking lot, sledding hill improvements and more.

The former 9-hole golf course at Beech Woods Park in Southfield is closed and work is underway to transform it into a nature preserve with accessible trails, gathering and seating areas, interpretive stations and more. Natural areas restoration continues as plans for pedestrian pathways and amenities are finalized. The area will open to the public in 2026 and promises to offer residents high quality experiences in nature and opportunities to enjoy the new trails, relax and socialize in a beautiful natural setting.

The former Paradise Peninsula area of the park is closed and will reopen in 2026 as Cattail Cove. New playground equipment has been delivered and is being stored on site. Demolition of existing buildings and features is underway. Improvements will include a new and expanded playground, a new pavilion, a new adult fitness area and new year-round restrooms.
