Construction Update
Due to ongoing construction, Catalpa Oaks is closed. Improvements will include:
- Paved parking lot
- An additional picnic shelter
- Improved accessible pathways
- Playground expansion
Renovations are expected to be complete in Spring of 2026, although there will be intermittent closures throughout 2026 to allow for turf growth.
Vincent Gregory Pavilion
Due to construction, Catalpa Oaks will not be renting its picnic shelter in 2025. Look for a second picnic pavilion and other park improvements coming in 2026 as detailed above.
About
Catalpa Oaks preserves 24 acres of green space in Southfield adjacent to the South Oakland Health Department. The park is home of the Annual Great Marshmallow Drop, a spring event drawing 5,000+ participants to watch 15,000 marshmallows drop from a helicopter. Catalpa Oaks features one youth and four large soccer fields which will not be available for rent in 2025 due to construction. Its playgrounds include a universally-accessible playscape and swings for all abilities. A .8-mile aggregate perimeter pathway around the park provides a walking and running loop. The Vincent Gregory Pavilion offers picnic table seating for 100 people, but will not be available for rent in 2025 due to construction. Modern restrooms are on site and open daily April through October.
