Main Street Oakland County
Boosting Downtown Development
Main Street Oakland County (MSOC) is an economic development program for downtowns, with a historic preservation philosophy and an emphasis on place making. We help local government develop their districts as vibrant places that serve as the heart of their communities.
Established in 2000, MSOC is the nation's first and only county-wide coordinating Main Street program.
Since 2001, MSOC communities have added a cumulative $1.17 billion in public and private investment, which included over 700 new construction projects, 3,000 building rehabilitations, and almost 700 public improvements. This investment has led to over 1,500 new businesses creating a net of over 11,000 new full and part-time jobs.
Using the Main Street Four-Point Approach® of locally driven, volunteer lead, place-based community development, the program has had significant positive economic impacts upon the county’s cities, villages, and townships. The successes of MSOC touch all corners of Oakland County, supporting work in economic development, historic preservation, placemaking, and tourism.
