Parks in Action Series  

Parks in Action is a fun, engaging community program that combines outdoor recreation, nature exploration and hands-on activities in our parks. Designed for all ages, this series offers a variety of interactive experiences such as archery, fishing, nature education, games, and more - encouraging participants to get active, try something new and connect with the outdoors.

The series includes these upcoming sessions:

• Aug. 12, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Red Oaks Nature Center. Activities include a portable planetarium, Birds of Prey program, Agents of Discovery and a nature hike
• Sept. 19, 3-8 p.m. at Independence Oaks County Park. Recreation opportunities include archery, kayaking, fishing, hiking and more 

This program is sponsored by MSU Federal Credit Union. 

All guests who register at $5/person will receive a branded water bottle. Earn stickers for your Parks in Action water bottle (registered guests) or receive stickers to decorate your own water bottle (all guests). Register online or sign-up the same day.

Trailblazers Hiking Series

Join Oakland County Parks staff for informative, scenic hikes during the TrailBlazers Hiking Series from 6-7 p.m. at Lyon Oaks County Park & Golf Course. This four-month hiking series offers a chance to stretch your legs on a one-hour guided hike covering these topics.

• July 16 - The Wood Wide Web. Trees use networks of mycelia to communicate. Find out how and why this helps the forest community
• Aug. 20 - Native, Naturalized, Invasive. Learn the history of Michigan’s introduced plants - how did they get here? Who brought them? Why were they brought? Which ones are harmful to native species and which ones have become naturalized during their time here?
• Sept. 17 - Fly Away Home. Birds, butterflies and bats are set to make their way south. Find out why some species leave while others stay
• Oct. 25 - Fall Color Tour. Enjoy the fall splendor and discover the science behind why leaves change colors

The TrailBlazer Hiking Series is an affordable, enjoyable way to squeeze fitness into your busy schedule by being able to socialize, get in your steps and learn new facts about the natural world all in one exciting hour-long program. Hike with a friend or meet new people on the trails.

Hikers should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and bug spray.

Archery Hunting

Archery hunting for white-tailed deer (with some limitations) is allowed in this park, hunting locations and rules are listed in the individual park archery maps. No parks allow firearm hunting.

• Orion Oaks Nature Park
• Rose Oaks Nature Park

e-Bikes

Please note that ONLY Class 1 e-Bikes with pedal assist only with no throttle are allowed on our trails. High-speed e-Bikes that can travel at 20 mph or faster, along with Sur-rons, are not permitted. If you have any questions, please contact the park directly. We appreciate your help keeping our trails safe and fun for all pedestrians and riders.
