County Executive Update on LegionellaOakland County shared this update to keep visitors and employees informed following recent water testing at the County Courthouse in Pontiac. Testing detected the presence of Legionella bacteria in four of 11 locations tested within the courthouse. The county is taking immediate action to install filters on the tested fixtures and others in the same water loop. The water system will be flushed and additional remediation measures will be taken, as recommended by the county’s water consultant. Fixtures that cannot be immediately serviced will be temporarily closed. The facility will continue to undergo periodic testing per state guidelines.

Legionella bacteria are commonly found in natural and man-made water systems. Its presence does not automatically mean there is a health risk. The bacteria spread through water droplets in the air and are not spread person-to-person. Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease may include cough, fever, headache, muscle aches, shortness of breath, and in some cases confusion, nausea, or diarrhea. The courthouse remains open, and employees will continue to receive updates alongside the public press release.
