Welcome to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office
The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for investigating and determining the cause and manner of death in any violent, sudden, unexpected, suspicious, or otherwise unexplained death within the county. This includes deaths in police custody and jail deaths. The office works closely with law enforcement agencies and other medical professionals to provide accurate and timely death investigations.
Autopsy Report
Normal turnaround time for an autopsy report is 14-16 weeks after the autopsy is performed. Next of Kin of a deceased can call and request a copy of the report be sent to them when completed.
Private Autopsy
This autopsy is performed by a qualified pathologist at the request of a family or individual outside of the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s office.
Death Certificates
We start the process, but it is not considered an official death certificate until it is filed at the clerk’s office by a funeral director. Contact the Oakland County Clerk's Office at 248-858-0571.
