Pontiac Oaks Design Information
Pontiac Oaks – formerly known as Hawthorne Park – is in the construction phase of the improvements funded by the Oakland County Parks Healthy Communities Park and Outdoor Recreation Investment Plan. The anticipated investment of $2.215 million includes $1.3 million from the American Recovery Plan Act and $915,000 from Oakland County Parks’ capital improvement fund.
What we heard from you
The preliminary design for Pontiac Oaks has been developed with guidance from the public engagement conducted in 2023. The most important priorities identified by Pontiac residents were:
- Care of the forest, water and natural areas
- Maintaining a clean, safe park with working amenities
- Making sure everyone is welcome to gather, relax and play at the park
What has been done
Work started in 2023 to improve existing park facilities and reopen closed facilities. The following has been completed or is underway:
- Management of natural resources
- New larger fishing pier
- Expansion and renovation of playground
- Renovation of restrooms
- Installation of accessible kayak launch
- Nature-based play pockets and playful pathways
- Increased visibility and connection to Creger Lake
- Accessible gathering pavilion

Columbia Avenue Greenway Connector
The Columbia Avenue Greenway Connector project will explore ways to make crossing Telegraph Road safer for area residents that want to walk, bike and roll to Pontiac Oaks. Please check back soon for additional project updates and information.
