Respiratory Health Dashboard

Tracks emergency department visits using data from the Michigan Syndromic Surveillance System for respiratory conditions like RSV, influenza, and COVID-19. It also captures broader respiratory symptoms to help monitor trends and support public health efforts.

Interpreting the Numbers

Respiratory illnesses tend to increase during colder months, resulting in more emergency department (ED) visits in the fall and winter. The severity of respiratory illnesses often depends on factors such as age underlying health conditions, and access to timely treatment. Because this data is based of ED visits, it excludes mild illnesses managed at home or in non-emergency settings. Differences in ED visit rates may also reflect challenges in accessing healthcare rather than variation in illness rates. For example, higher ED visit rates among certain groups could indicate barriers to primary care or insurance access.

Improving Trends

Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) provides immunizations for all ages at our North and South Oakland Health Centers, and outreach clinics throughout Oakland County. Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are available on a walk-in basis. Also, OCHD partners with local agencies to provide immunizations in the community, including at Affirmations and Centro Multicultural la Familia. Interpreting the Numbers

Overall, infants in Oakland County have better health outcomes when compared to babies across the state of Michigan. However, these positive trends do not reflect the experiences of all communities within the county. Preterm birth rates are higher among Black/African American babies compared to white babies, and Hispanic parents are the least likely to access prenatal care in the first trimester. While the county's overall infant mortality rate has improved, Black/African American infants die at a significantly higher rate than infants of all other racial and ethnic groups. Maternal and child health is a key pillar of Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) services and they continue to link arms with partners to improve these health indicators and outcomes.

Improving Trends

Oakland County Health Division has two coalitions dedicated to investigating and preventing infant mortality, with special focus on the communities of Pontiac and Southfield. Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) brings a multidisciplinary community team together to examine confidential, de-identified cases of fetal and infant deaths. The Best Start for Babies Oakland County community action team acts on the recommendations made by FIMR to prevent infant deaths through education and community partnership.

Medical Examiner Dashboard

Shows deaths related to firearms, suicide, and drug overdoses using data collected by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office. Understanding these trends can guide efforts to prevent future tragedies and save lives.

Interpreting the Numbers

Since 2020, drug-related deaths have been the most common type of injury death in Oakland County, followed by suicides and firearm-related deaths. Between 2022 and 2023, firearm deaths decreased, while both suicide and drug deaths went up slightly.

Both firearm-related and suicide deaths primarily impact white individuals and males, with numbers highest among males in the 20-39 and 40-69 age groups. Overall, males are more impacted than females across all age groups for both firearm and suicide-related deaths. Suicides account for most of these firearm deaths, and firearms remain the most common means of suicide locally.

Similarly, a larger number of white individuals die from drug-related causes in Oakland County, though Black/African American individuals experience a higher amount compared to their percentage of the population. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are involved in the majority of local drug-related fatalities.

Improving Trends

Oakland County is committed to reducing preventable deaths by linking arms with community partners to implement primary prevention strategies, improve access to behavioral health care, and increase access to data and resources.

Overdose Fatality Review (OFR) is a national model that involves in-depth reviews of fatal overdose cases by multi-disciplinary teams to optimize response to the overdose crisis. It's a data-driven process that aims to identify system gaps and generate community-specific strategies for prevention and intervention. The Oakland County OFR meets monthly and consists of confidential reviews of individuals overdose cases and community-level data to identify missed opportunities for prevention and intervention. A list of recommended actions for preventing future overdose deaths is generated at each meeting for future implementation by the OFR subcommittees.

The Oakland County Opioid Settlement Steering Committee brings together key stakeholders to assess the community's needs related to overdose in Oakland County. Its primary purpose is to develop a strategic plan for the equitable distribution of Oakland County's opioid settlement funds, ensuring that resources effectively address local challenges.

Oakland County will partner with the Michigan Public Health Institute collaborate on a suicide fatality review national demonstration site, one of four demonstration sites across the county. This project will help partners better understand and prevent suicide deaths in Oakland County while contributing to the development of national model practices. More details will be coming later in 2025.
