In Michigan, the Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law allows law enforcement, family or household members, and healthcare providers to request a court order to temporarily remove firearms from someone who may pose a danger to themselves or others.

This section explains the ERPO process in Michigan—from how to access and file the necessary court forms, to what happens during the hearing, and what steps can be taken after an order is issued.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

Important Note: As the petitioner, you may be responsible for notifying the respondent about the ERPO hearing and for serving the ERPO once it is issued. While the court keeps petitioner addresses confidential, other personal details may not remain private.

If you are uncertain, unable, or uncomfortable serving as the petitioner but still believe an ERPO is necessary, you may contact your local law enforcement agency and ask them to file the ERPO petition on your behalf.
