The Basic Food Safety Class is offered monthly and designed to teach basic food safety fundamentals to food service personnel. The class focuses on the 5 main causes of foodborne illness and ways to control them.

This course is designed for students who have never been certified before, or who have previously been certified but it has been 10 (ten) or more years. This is a 16 hour certification course.

Who May Attend

Restaurant operators, food service managers, or anyone interested in food service sanitation is welcome.

Attendance

Attendance is required for the duration of the class. Late arrivals will be required to re-enroll in another available certification course.

Class Time

All classes begin at 8:30am with an hour lunch break for full-day classes. All classes begin at 8:30am and run until 12:30pm for half-day classes. See Class Schedule for class dates.

Refunds

Once enrolled for a class, there will be NO refunds. Students are not permitted to transfer to another class unless arrangements are made 10 days prior to the start of the class they enrolled in.

Register

To register, complete the registration form located on the Class Schedule and mail or deliver to Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) with the appropriate fee. Classes fill quickly; therefore, early registration is recommended.

It is recommended that students pick up a book prior to class. Books can be obtained at both OCHD offices.

You will need to bring a valid picture I.D. to class or you will not be able to sit for the exam.

This course is designed for students who have already received a certificate from a previous food service management certification course and need to become recertified due to an expired certificate. This course covers the same material as the 16-hour course; however, it is in an abbreviated format. The class is designed to have four hours of course lecture and review.

Who May Attend

Restaurant operators, food service managers, or anyone interested in food service sanitation that has prior certification is welcome. If a certificate is more than ten (10) years old, it is recommended that the full 16-hour certification course be taken. Students must provide a copy of their previous certificate from a State of Michigan approved food service management certification course at the time of registration.

Which training programs are acceptable?

Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) offers ServSafe® Manager Certification courses.

How do you get certified?

To register for a Food Service Certified Manager Certification course through OCHD, complete the registration form located on the Class Schedule and mail or deliver to OCHD with the appropriate fee. You may also call OCHD at 248-858-1312.

How does this affect new establishments?

Any new facilities or facilities that have a change of ownership must have a Food Service Certified Manager prior to opening.

How do you get your ServSafe E-Certificate?

If you have taken a course through ServSafe®, you may now get an electronic copy of your certificate which can be emailed or printed. Please visit the website servsafe.com, go to My Exams, and you will see an option to download your certificate.

What are the requirements if the Food Service Certified Manager leaves employment?

In this case, the operation is allowed three months (90 days) to regain compliance with this code. Any establishment without a Food Service Certified Manager must immediately notify the OCHD.

How will Oakland County verify Manager Certification?

Certificates must be presented to the sanitarian upon inspection.

How are duplicate certificates obtained if lost?

To obtain a duplicate certificate from ServSafe®, call 800-765-2122 or visit the website servsafe.com. For information on obtaining a duplicate certificate from other accredited programs, please contact the certifying organization directly.
