Being a Juror is a vital part of our justice system. It is the duty of each American citizen to serve jury duty when called. It is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. Just as you would want to have a fair and equitable jury for yourself or someone you love, every other citizen is entitled to the same. Your participation in our legal system as a juror is the cornerstone of our justice system.

The Oakland County Jury Commission chooses prospective jurors from random computer selection by driver's license number or personal identification number. The questionnaire that you previously filled out from this random selection is then forwarded to the proper jurisdiction. Prospective jurors are randomly selected from these questionnaires for jury duty.

Each prospective juror is chosen from a blind draw. Each prospective juror is then interviewed by the defense and prosecuting attorneys to determine if they will be chosen as a juror.

• Bring your summons with you
• Be on time
• Dress appropriately (no jeans or shorts)
• Arrange for your own child care during your jury term
• Arrange for your transportation to and from jury duty

The court will provide a private space when needed.  However, we are not able to provide childcare.

For jury selection you should plan on the full day from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

At Jury Selection, if you are selected for a jury trial, be prepared to proceed to jury trial the day of jury selection or to proceed to jury trial the week immediately following the jury selection day. The average length of a jury trial is one or two days.

For the first day of service, you will be paid $15.00 for a half day and $30.00 for a full day. For additional days, you will be paid $22.50 for a half day and $45.00 for a full day. You will also be paid round trip mileage of $.20 per mile, computed from your home address. This amount is set by the state legislature and is considered reimbursement for your travel and other expenses.

If you have moved out of the area you must provide a copy of your driver's license, front and back, showing your new address. Upon receipt of proof, you will be permanently excused from serving jury duty at this court. You may send proof to 523juryclerk@oakgov.com.

If you are over 70 years of age, you are not obligated to serve jury duty. You must show proof of your age in order to be permanently excused. Of course, if you are over 70 and wish to serve, you may.

We will time stamp your summons when you leave the court on jury selection day. You can use this as proof to provide to your employer. Within two weeks after serving your jury term, you will be sent a payment form showing the amount you will receive. The check is issued from Oakland County and will be sent separately within approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

Because you are a student you are not exempt from serving jury duty. However, the court is willing to work around your school schedule as much as possible. You may contact the jury clerk at 523juryclerk@oakgov.com to request a different day to serve

All medical excuses must be accompanied by a letter from your doctor two weeks prior to your scheduled jury selection date. In order to be permanently excused from serving jury duty, a doctor's note is required and must state that you are to be permanently excused from serving.  Documentation can be emailed to 523juryclerk@oakgov.com.

You must have permission from the Court to be excused. Due to the importance of the judicial process and the need for available jurors, very few jurors are excused from service. If you have an extraordinary circumstance that requires you to be excused, you must submit a detailed request in writing within 2 weeks of receiving your summons. You will receive an answer from the Court shortly thereafter. (Although the Court sympathizes with work and childcare concerns, we are unable to excuse jurors for these reasons since they are shared by the majority of prospective jurors.)
