GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a unit of Oakland County's Department of Information Technology.

The mission of Oakland County's GIS is to provide a progressive, location-based solution that promotes informed decision making, improves citizen services, and encourages collaboration across all levels of government. Our objectives are to:

1. Leverage accurate and current location-based data to support decision making in Oakland County.
2. Strategically implement and promote focused location-based services to facilitate citizen access to information.
3. Expand Oakland County’s location-based services to reach anyone, at any time, from anywhere.
4. Create and sustain innovative partnerships and collaboration opportunities.
5. Foster a sustainable technological environment for Oakland County location-based services

Our Services

Environmental Planning Support - Provide environmental related information for community masterplans, partner projects, park and recreation master plans, and grant applications.

Custom Mapping and Information - Prepare custom maps, data, and other information such as Oakland County Geology, OakRoutes map and trail network, Green Infrastructure Vision and Fishing Opportunities.

Environmental Education and Outreach - Build awareness for local and regional environmental issues by providing workshops, presentations, meetings, and coordinating the Trails, Water, & Lands Alliance.

County-wide Environmental Related Projects - Coordinate countywide efforts such as the Green Infrastructure Vision, Oakland County Trail Network and Water Resources Initiatives.

Regional and Statewide Environmental Initiatives - Provide support to SEMCOG, MNFI, MDNR, HCMA, the RC&D Council for regional and statewide initiatives.

Environmental Related Place-Making Opportunities - Help local communities identify and preserve significant features within the community that help make the county a special place.

The mission of the Land Use and Zoning Program is to prepare and provide land use, zoning, and master plan information to and for Oakland County communities to enhance coordination of land use decision-making. Oakland County is mandated under Michigan law to review all Master Plans and Master Plan amendments prior to adoption. The county also reviews township rezoning where the property abuts a community boundary or county-owned property.
