Most job growth in Oakland County will be in the fields of Health Care, Information Technology and Advanced Manufacturing. Skilled Trades demand is among the highest in the nation. Find out ways to learn certain trades and decide what types of training will work best for you.

Certifications and licenses often can be obtained in less than a year. Many skilled trades can be learned through apprenticeships or short-term training. Tuition assistance also may be available. Some training programs even offer college credits. Vocational schools, career colleges and technical schools can save you money and time when compared to earning a two or four year degree.

State Launches Michigan Reconnect Program Offering Free Tuition to Eligible Adults

The new Michigan Reconnect program provides eligible adults with the opportunity to earn a tuition-free associate degrees or skills certificates at their local, in-district community colleges or select private training schools.

The goal is to help people prepare for in-demand careers in manufacturing, construction, information technology, health care and business management. This program is directly aligned with Oakand80 program and its objective of having 80 percent of the adults in Oakland County obtain a post-secondary degree or credential by 2030.

MICHIGAN RECONNECT 101

Leveraging the state program to upskill your employees, increase productivity and improve staff retention

Since its inception four years ago, more than 207,000 state residents have taken advantage of the Michigan Reconnect program to receive free tuition and complete their post-secondary education at local community colleges across the state.

Oakland County employers can leverage this program to enhance their teams at no cost. In addition, Oakland County Michigan Works! can provide supportive services to eligible Michigan Reconnect participants that help break down barriers to returning to school or receiving advanced training.

This opportunity is aligned with Oakland80, the County’s ambitious initiative to have 80 percent of adults obtain a college degree or skills certification by 2030.

Join us for our next free, virtual workshop, which will provide an overview of the Michigan Reconnect program and how it benefits employers and employees alike.
