Most job growth in Oakland County will be in the fields of Health Care, Information Technology and Advanced Manufacturing. Skilled Trades demand is among the highest in the nation. Find out ways to learn certain trades and decide what types of training will work best for you.

Certifications and licenses often can be obtained in less than a year. Many skilled trades can be learned through apprenticeships or short-term training. Tuition assistance also may be available. Some training programs even offer college credits. Vocational schools, career colleges and technical schools can save you money and time when compared to earning a two or four year degree.

State Launches Michigan Reconnect Program Offering Free Tuition to Eligible Adults

The new Michigan Reconnect program provides eligible adults with the opportunity to earn a tuition-free associate degrees or skills certificates at their local, in-district community colleges or select private training schools.

The goal is to help people prepare for in-demand careers in manufacturing, construction, information technology, health care and business management. This program is directly aligned with Oakand80 program and its objective of having 80 percent of the adults in Oakland County obtain a post-secondary degree or credential by 2030.

Driven for the Future Auto RD Tech Career Webinar Series

 Through the partnership of Toyota and Michigan 4-H, youth will experience a variety of career paths in the automotive industry as well as build crucial workforce readiness skills during this five webinar series. Skilled trade careers and apprentice experiences will be highlighted.

Any attendee who attends all five webinars (live or recorded) with submission of contact information will receive an incentive.

This program is FREE and open to all, though geared towards middle school students, high school students, and recent graduates.

March 20, 2025 at 6pm EST– Rev Up Your Future: Careers in Automotive Performance and Evaluation
April 10, 2025 at 6pm EST-Drive Success with Workplace Professionalism
May 1, 2025 at 6pm EST– Engineer the Future with Careers in Integrated Vehicle Systems
