Employee Development Opportunities for CVTs (Local Communities)

To foster intergovernmental collaboration, Oakland County Human Resources offers affordable training courses to local communities for their employees. These courses are designed to help organizations discover new and innovative approaches to improving efficiency while maintaining or enhancing current service levels.

Current Rates

  • Half-day in-person sessions $90
  • Full-day in-person sessions $125

Instructor-Led Courses

We offer up to 40 professional development courses that encompass the following competency areas: Interpersonal, Collaboration, Self-Management, Leadership, and Management/Supervisory skills.

Custom Training

Oakland County's goal is to work with local municipalities to provide training courses to their employees at a low cost. We are able to travel to local municipalities or host trainings on-site.

Difficult Conversations (Interpersonal Skills)
One of the most difficult parts of being in a supervisory or management role is having to initiate difficult conversations. These are often about things that go beyond us – interpersonal conflict between colleagues, performance issues, dress code, or hygiene. Talking about these things isn’t easy. Come practice a healthy communication model, identify and avoid common communication pitfalls in difficult conversations, and facilitate difficult conversations.

Effective Listening (Interpersonal Skills)
Effective listening can lead to clearer communication and build more effective relationships with your colleagues, manager, and clients. Developing Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace (Social Intelligence)
Emotional intelligence skills are critical to workplace success and prove to be a key indicator of human performance and development. Practicing Emotional Intelligence through the four key dimensions of leadership will increase work satisfaction, create trust, and foster organizational commitment and loyalty.  Course content includes self-assessment, discussion, and case study analysis.

Emotional Intelligence: Mastering Anger Management and Self-Regulation (Social Intelligence)
Increase your self-awareness, look at Emotional Intelligence (EI), and explore the nature and physiology of anger when your brain perceives a threat. Practice strategies for managing anger and self-regulation during this course.  By interrupting our thought patterns, we can work toward better communication and resolutions. The course ends with stress management and relaxation techniques while examining how to build healthy resilience and coping mechanisms.

Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) (Industry Expertise)
Examine a CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) and learn how to read one? A representative from the Labor Relations unit will discuss a broad overview of the two main Master Agreements with the IEBW and UAW. We will discuss the Grievance Procedure, Progressive Discipline, Arbitration, Management Rights, ULP (unfair Labor Practice) and our Zero Tolerance for Retaliation policy.
