The Oakland County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications & Operations Division features one of the largest 9-1-1 centers in Michigan. Dispatchers are trained from the ground up, so we can work with persons with various levels of experience.

SALARY: $41,839-$64,527

  • Shift premium for afternoons and mid nights
  • 40 hours of personal leave time per year
  • Bi-weekly vacation time accrual
  • 40 hours of sheriff holiday leave time
  • Salary based on commensurate experience

    Oakland County pays 10%

Oakland NEXT Truck Driver

According to American Trucking Associations (ATA), nearly 75 percent of all freight in our country is moved by truck drivers. Job opportunities in this field continue to increase, with two percent projected job growth annually through 2029, generating an additional 30,600 jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Truck drivers earn from $14.21 - $30.83 per hour, depending on company and experience. 

Oakland County Michigan Works!, in partnership with several truck driving schools across the tri-county area, offers short-term training opportunities with tuition assistance available to eligible candidates. 

Training: Various Training providers are available in Oakland County. Candidates are able to select a school that is closest to their home and best suited for their needs.

Logistics Technician

One of the Fastest Growing Industries in Metro Detroit

From the automotive industry to Amazon, logistics professionals are more critical than ever, with supply chains and fulfillment companies delivering goods across the world in record volumes. 

Job opportunities in this field are booming, with a projected growth of four percent annual across the country through 2029, including Metro Detroit. Entry level wages: $15-$21 per hour. 

Oakland County Michigan Works!, in partnership with Oakland Community College and PepsiCo, are offering a certified logistics technician training program, free to eligible candidates.

Applicant Requirements:

  • 18-24 Years-Old 
  • High School Degree or GED 
  • Commitment to 8-week training 
  • Other eligibility factors may apply

Earned Certifications:

  • Foundational Certified Logistics Associate (CLA)
  • Mid-Level Technical CLT Certification

Oakland NEXT: Help Desk Administrator

Complete a FREE certificate training program right from home

Certified help desk administrators, responsible for computer system troubleshooting and support, are in hot demand. In southeast Michigan, there are several thousand job postings annually, according to the Workforce Intelligence Network - 2,563 during the third quarter of 2020, alone. 

Eligible young adults can join their ranks through a partnership between Oakland County Michigan Works! and training provider MedCerts.

Applicant Requirements:

  • 16-24 years old
  • High School Degree or GED
  • Commit to 18-week course
  • Must begin online classes by March 31, 2021


  • $14.14 to $21.88 per hour


  • $1,000 incentive for completing program
  • FREE laptop computer to keep

Qualified participants receive free tuition, with the opportunity to earn a certification. A free laptop computer is provided to each program participant, as well. In addition to obtaining a certification, participants can access financial management and career readiness courses online.
