Description of Duties:
The intern works directly with the Community Liaison and the Oakland County Sheriff to launch community outreach programs and organize various events. The intern will be responsible for researching, compiling and presenting information as well as drafting grant proposals, letters, and media advisories. Various additional duties may be assigned.
Flexible, up to 40 hours a week for college credit hours. The Sheriff's Office is open Monday-Friday, 8-4:30.

Description of Work
Under limited supervision, performs law enforcement functions within the jurisdiction of the Oakland County, including Parks System. Investigates and reports to supervisors accidents, complaints, and other incidents. Responds to disturbances and maintains order. Rides a horse to patrol park paths and trails, as well as other areas that cannot be accessible by other forms of transportation to enforce park rules and regulations. Apprehends disorderly persons. Is required to restrain individuals and assist in making arrests. Shift assignments are mostly on weekends and holidays. Utilizes current county-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Requirements include a riding evaluation, personal interview and an extensive background investigation. Applicants must attend a 12 week, evening and Saturday basic Reserve Police Academy once the hiring process is complete. Applicants provide their own horse, tow vehicle, and trailer meeting department standards. Applicants and their mounts will exhibit healthy, well groomed, calm, controlled mannerisms, equitation and behavior skills, balanced seat and social behavior and people skills, acceptable within crowds, drill maneuvers, and with other horses. A combination of equitation, dressage, show, and pragmatic horsemanship are preferred.
Deputies are required to ride approximately two hundred hours per year with the Mounted Unit which includes patrolling the Oakland County Parks System, Paint Creek Trail System, and other details in and around Oakland County on weekends and holidays during summer and spring months. This is a paid part-time position.
Requires experienced horsemen and women with the ability to control potential hazardous situations while on horseback.
Only geldings of 15.2 hands or higher will be accepted for the unit. All equipment and tack is provided.
At the time of application, applicants must:
Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test.
Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law. Generally, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying).
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.
Have at least 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.
Have normal corrected hearing in each ear, per Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
Special Features or Conditions
- MUST SUPPLY OWN HORSE, TRAILER AND TOW VEHICLE.
Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license and firearms qualification and deputization status.
Must complete annual horsemanship training as established by the Sheriff's Office.
A field investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, credit, criminal, military, or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff Department before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statue will be a disqualifying factor.

All applicants who are given favorable consideration for a position with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department will be tested for drugs before hire. Drug testing will be by urine sample. No individual will be hired prior to successful completion of the testing of drugs of abuse.
