Cops-N-Cribs Program

Cops N Cribs ProgramNationally, approximately 2,300 infants die annually from Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) causes, previously known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is estimated that half of these deaths result from unsafe sleeping environments, such as soft bedding, sharing beds, or sleeping in accident prone positions. As a result, accidental deaths occur from suffocation, entrapment (when an infant gets trapped between two objects, such as a mattress and a wall, and cannot breathe), or strangulation (when something presses on or wraps around an infant's neck, blocking the infant’s airway), commonly known as Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed (AASB). Sleep-related causes of infant death can be prevented by following safe sleep guidelines. Providing a crib to a family who needs one may save an infant’s life.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with The Oakland County Department of Health & Human Services, are offering FREE portable cribs to provide a safe sleeping environment to infants throughout Oakland County. If you have any questions or you or someone you know is in need of a crib, please contact the Nurse on Call (N.O.C) at the Oakland County Health Division by calling 800-848-5533.
