Undersheriff Curtis D. Childs was promoted to his current position in January, 2022. As Undersheriff, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff's Office, acts as the Sheriff's Chief Deputy and aids in the oversight of the $165 million annual budget, while managing over 1500 employees. His duties include labor contracts and negotiations, new hire approvals, disciplinary actions and lawsuits. He also serves as Public Information Officer and Chief Advisor to Sheriff Michael Bouchard. Prior to his current appointment, Undersheriff Childs was the Major Commander of the Corrections & Court Services Division of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, responsible for overseeing operations at the Main Jail/Annex Facility, East Annex Facility and Court Services.
Undersheriff Childs was hired by the Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy in 1992. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1998, Lieutenant in 2001, Captain in 2013, Major in 2020, and his current rank of Undersheriff in 2022.
Undersheriff Childs has previously been Commander of the Cell Extraction Team, a member of SWAT, a member of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard and has worked in all areas of Corrections, as well as at the Lyon Twp. and Commerce Twp. Substations. He has also served as a Lieutenant in the Corrective Services Satellite Division and the Emergency Response and Preparedness Division.
He received an Associates' Degree from Oakland Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Finance from Columbia Southern University. Additionally, he attended the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety Police Staff and Command Training in 2005. Undersheriff Childs was honored as Command Officer of the Year in 2010.
Undersheriff Childs is a member of the Michigan Sheriff's Association, the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Southeastern Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.
