Captain Mel Maier is the Commander of the Emergency Communications & Operations Division. Captain Maier began his career in law enforcement more than 28 years ago with the Garden City Police Department in Wayne County serving as a patrol officer, promoted to patrol Sergeant in 1996, and promoted to Lieutenant in 1998. Captain Maier joined the Sheriff's Office in 2009 and has led the Operations Center since. He is responsible for overseeing radio and 911 emergency communications within the Sheriff's Operations Center, manages the Warrants Unit in researching and entering criminal warrants, and is the Sheriff's communications representative within Oakland County's Homeland Security and Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Captain Maier has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, is a 2000 graduate of the Northwestern School of Staff and Command and has received Professional Excellence and Unit Commendation awards. He has represented the Major County Sheriffs' Association of America as the FirstNet Public Safety Advisory Committee- Vice Chair and Homeland Security's "SAFECOM" Emergency Response Council having served as Chair of the Funding & Sustainment Subcommittee. He also represented the Michigan Sheriffs' Association as a member of the Michigan Public Safety Frequency Advisory Committee. He represents the Oakland County Sheriff's Office as Chair of Radio Oversight, Co-Chair of both the County PSAP Coordinators Subcommittee and the County Radio Policy Subcommittee, as well as the SE Michigan Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) Regional Interoperable Communications Subcommittee. He has also been recognized for his leadership role in Emergency 911 communications as demonstrated by his past leadership positions within the Michigan Communication Directors Association (MCDA).
