Media Advisory

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson's Count Your Steps program kicks off its 10th year of fighting child obesity by promoting active and healthy lifestyles in children. More than 13,000 students from 105 schools will participate in the 2013 Count Your Steps program from April 8 - May 5. They will use pedometers to log the number of steps they take every day for one month. The students will also keep track of the fruits and vegetables they eat. The top three schools and their students will be recognized in a special ceremony in May.
Franklin Road Christian School, the 2012 first place Count Your Steps winner, will host the 10th anniversary kick-off event. Students at Franklin Road Christian will begin counting their steps with songs, dances and games by StarTrax and other fun activities provided by Oakland County Parks. In addition, the students will watch a special video message from Patterson.
Since the program's inception, over 188,000 third- and fourth-grade students have walked more than17 billion steps - that’s equal to 341 times around the Earth!
