Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Cameron Hutcherson from Verizon Wireless will present a $10,000 check to HAVEN on behalf of Oakland County employees. Beth Morrison, president & chief executive officer of HAVEN, will accept the donation on behalf of the non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault across Oakland County and surrounding communities.

Verizon is donating the money to HAVEN on behalf of Oakland County employees to thank them for their participation in Hopeline, Verizon Wireless' initiative to collect no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories and turn them into support for domestic violence organizations. Oakland County employees donated more than 800 phones to the Hopeline program between October of 2012 and January of 2013. Collection boxes were set up at various buildings around the county government campus by the Facilities Management Department.

The phones, once refurbished, can help victims of abuse feel safer and less isolated by giving them a way to call emergency or support services, employers, family members, and friends. The phones are provided with 3,000 minutes of service to local domestic violence organizations or law enforcement agencies for use with their domestic violence clients.
