January 20, 2016, Pontiac, MI - Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown is introducing a resolution to eliminate the fee charged for Veteran ID Cards.
"Our veterans have done enough for us, we should not be charging them for recognition of their service," said Clerk Brown.
Currently, Oakland County veterans can obtain a Veterans ID Card at the County Clerk's Office for a $10 fee. Clerk Brown's resolution will waive this fee and offer the ID at no cost.
In order to obtain a Veterans ID Card you must appear in person to be photographed and bring the items below:
- Original military discharge papers - MUST show Honorable Discharge or equivalent status - (unless currently on file with our office)
- Valid driver license or state ID with correct Oakland County address
Veterans may use this ID card to obtain discounts at many merchants in the area. Merchants participate on a voluntary basis and not all are publicized. It is recommended to always ask if a discount is offered. Visit The Military Wallet for a list of some advertised participating merchants.
A veteran designation is also available on driver's license and other state ID cards through the Michigan Secretary of State. More information is available on their website, www.michigan.gov/sos.
