Bluebird Nest Box Season Kick-off

Be a Citizen Scientist. Oakland County Parks and Recreation manages nest boxes at seven parks for the Eastern Bluebird and other cavity-nesting native birds. Nest boxes are monitored by trained volunteers. Information about the birds, monitoring techniques and other volunteer requirements will be presented. Volunteers are asked to check nest boxes routinely from March-August. Nests are tracked in NestWatch through Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Training is free and open to the public. Call 248-858-0916 weekdays or Wint Nature Center (248-625-6473) on Saturdays with questions.

Beaver in your own backyard? Believe it or not, Oakland County is home to a thriving population of Michigan's largest rodent. Feel its fur, touch beaver teeth, and enjoy an ecosystem talk on how beavers transform wetlands. Each participant will engineer their own unique ecosystem in the form of a tiny take-home terrarium. $8/person. Preregistration with payment required. Oakland County: 200 Years of Innovation

Dr. Richard Stamps, associate professor of anthropology (retired) at Oakland University, will discuss the history of Oakland County, including its formation as a new form of government in the 1800s and why celebrating its bicentennial in 2020 matters. Registration is open to RHPL cardholders.

The Land of Healthful Delight

Highlights from the Rod and Sue Wilson Collection of Rochester History. The Wilson collection contains historical materials of unique interest and importance to Oakland County, especially the Rochester area. At this event, Mr. Wilson will share his expertise and experience as a collector, as well as stories and tidbits about some of the interesting items in the collection.

Oakland County's 200th Birthday

Oakland County's 200th birthday is March 28 and the county has partnered with the Detroit Zoo for a special celebration admission rate of $10 for county residents - a $9 savings off the regular same-day ticket price. Residents - 2,020 of them - will be able to enjoy the zoo for the day at the discounted rate, simply by taking a fun, interactive quiz and answering a few questions about Oakland County's history.
