President & CEO
South Oakland Shelter
Ryan Hertz helped transform the South Oakland Shelter from a safety-net emergency shelter program to a solutions- oriented multi-service agency designed to end homelessness for families and individuals.
Since joining the shelter staff in 2010, Ryan has doubled the overall budget, won more than $500,000 in renewable annual contracts to provide permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people with disabilities, and has helped hundreds of homeless individuals and families in securing and maintaining housing.
Ryan is a board member of the Lathrup Village DDA, vice president of the Alliance for Housing, and was recognized in 2012 by Wayne State University's School of Social Work as their "Alumnus of the Year" and the Race Relations & Diversity Task Force's "Diversity Champion." Since 2012, he has served as a commissioner for the Ferndale Housing Commission and is a trustee on the Upland Hills School Board since 2011.
