Growing up in Ludington where beautiful Lake Michigan was the backdrop for a childhood filled with hunting, fishing, water sports and community recreation, Phil was inspired to seek a professional path that combined his love of the outdoors and passion for business.
Phil received an undergraduate degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration with a concentration in Commercial Recreation and Facility Management from Central Michigan University. An internship with Oakland County Parks and Recreation was followed by recreation programming and assistant director positions with Orion and Oxford townships.
In 2006, Phil was hired by Oakland County Parks and Recreation as the Recreation Supervisor, where he was in charge of the very programs he supported as an intern. As the parks system finalized a 10-year Strategic Master Plan in 2009, he was promoted to Business Development Representative for Internal Services. Today, Phil manages a five-year $5.5 million technology roadmap, oversees its website DestinationOakland.com and serves as a liaison with Oakland County Information Technology to identify and coordinate new technology system developments and enhancements.
He is committed to providing outstanding customer services to the park system’s 1.6 million annual visitors across 13 parks and golf courses. Additionally, he supports internal customer service to the system’s 65 full-time and 600 part-time employees by coordinating fleet management operations, administering park property leases and acting as a liaison to the county’s fiscal services and purchasing departments for efforts that span the parks system.
Since 2001, Phil has been a committed and active member of the Michigan Recreation and Park Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and advocacy for park, recreation and leisure service providers. In 2006, he received MRPA’s New Professional of the Year Award. Phil was a grant committee member from 2003-2007 and served as a Regional Director on the Board of Directors from 2006-2008 Phil was also active with the Northwest Parks and Recreation Association Regional Group serving at the President and Vice President/Treasurer from 2004-2006.
Phil has served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Recreation and Park Association Foundation since 2007. He was on the board during a time where the Foundation was awarded and managed more than $2 million dollars in grant funds from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through The Access to Recreation Grant Program which was developed to help enhance recreational opportunities for people with disabilities for Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Member Agencies.
Committed to his community, Phil Castonia has served as a City of Auburn Hills Public Safety Advisory Board Member and Chairman and is currently a Commissioner for the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department. In 2005, while working for Oxford Township, he participated in a water drive for the victims of Hurricane Katrina by delivering supplies to Oxford, Mississippi. The convoy of six trucks drove 14 hours down and back in the weekend following this national disaster.
In 2012, Phil achieved the honor of Certified Park and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Park Association.
Phil and wife Melissa are the proud parents of Emma, 3, and Nate, 1. The family resides in Oxford and spends their free time camping and exploring Michigan’s outdoors.
