National Safety Month Gun Lock Giveaway

Since 2014, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners has honored National Safety Month in June by holding a press conference to promote the importance of safe firearm storage in preventing suicide, tragic accidents and gun violence. As part of this effort, Vice Chairman Michael Spisz spearheaded a county-wide free gun safety lock giveaway through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, which has donated thousands of locks to the program each year. Oakland County residents can get a free gun safety lock from a participating local law enforcement agency. This public safety initiative is an important part of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ Study Group on Gun Violence’s ongoing effort to promote effective gun safety practices and increase public awareness of the proper securing of firearms.

Lock-It-Up Oakland Safe Storage Partnerships

Launched in 2016, the Lock-It-Up Oakland program aims to reduce the threat of accidental deaths and crimes committed with stolen firearms, while building public awareness of the benefits of safe firearm storage practices. Through this initiative, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners' Study Group on Gun Violence and the Oakland County Sheriff have worked together to develop partnerships with local retailers willing to provide discounts on products promoting safe firearm storage:

➤ Dunham's Sports is giving 15% discounts for gun safe purchases (print coupon)

➤ Safes and Guns Unlimited in Keego Harbor is also offering a 15% discount on gun safes when you mention "Lock‐It‐Up Oakland"

➤ The Lock‐It‐Up Oakland committee also appreciates support from Costco and Sam’s Club
