Forensic scientists serve as the intermediaries between law enforcement, medical examiners, and the legal system. So Thomas Van Koughnett II understands that it is one of his responsibilities and obligations to educate juries, who come from all walks of life.

Van Koughnett is an experienced forensic biologist in the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, with skills ranging from DNA analysis, software implementation, expert testimony and technical assessment.

As a critical team member, he helped set up a new laboratory in the Sheriff's Office, participated in the construction of the unit, acquired new instrumentation, authored technical manuals and prepared for accreditation.

He received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master's from Oakland University. He has been a technical assessor for the ANAB: ANSI National Accreditation Board and is a Molecular Biology Certificant with the American Board of Criminalistics. He lives in Holly with his wife and four children.
