As a public health consultant for the state of Michigan's Health and Human Services Department, Townsend advocates for the children and families of Pontiac by increasing access to healthy food options and increasing daily physical activity.

Before joining the state, Townsend worked for Loving Family, LLC, promoting healthier lifestyles for children and their families.

She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University. Townsend is the chair of Mi Milk Collective, which supports black birth and lactation professionals, is on the board of the Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition and is the founder of Twintifull, serving as a birth doula.

She lives in Pontiac.
