Barton Malow

Working to open up the construction industry to underserved populations, Katie Gandy is a Senior Community Engagement Specialist for the Barton Malow construction company.

She works with internal and external partners, including labor unions, local governments and professional development agencies to educate people about a career in the construction industry.

Gandy has managed Barton Malow's six-week Boot Camp program for the last four years, which provides an opportunity for area residents between the ages of 18 and 24 to learn industry fundamentals needed for entering a career in the skilled trades.

The largest number of participants enrolled in the 2020 Boot Camp, 92 percent completed the program and 77 percent have received job offers, helping young people on a successful career path. Gandy also works with career tech education partners to recruit and educate underserved residents on careers in construction, provide access to support services and grants for apprentices.

Gandy serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Women in Construction and is a member of the Detroit Economic Club. She received a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and lives in Waterford.
