Aaron T. Whatley is the Parks and Recreation Director for the Charter Township of Orion. His passion for outdoor recreation led him to Ferris State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Leadership and Management. Shortly after his return to Oakland County, Aaron began working for Orion Township as a Recreation Programmer. Over his seven year tenure with the Township, Aaron has continued to grow through the parks system. He was promoted to oversee the Buildings and Grounds department in 2013 where he made significant improvements to the parks and saved thousands of taxpayer dollars on park operations. As of January 1st, 2018, Orion Township merged Buildings and Grounds with Community Programs, creating the Township’s largest department, Parks and Recreation. Aaron oversees this department and all of its full-time, part-time and seasonal employees and has implemented a smooth transition to the new structure. Aaron holds his Certified Parks and Recreation Professional certification through the National Parks and Recreation Association. His drive for the continual betterment of Orion Township through recreational programs and beautiful green space comes from his true love for nature and outdoor recreation. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking and a variety of outdoor activities, especially fishing. Aaron and his wife, Jess, are expecting their first child in 2018, and he looks forward to spending time on the river with their newest family member.
