Natural Areas Stewardship Manager
Oakland Township Parks & Recreation

I grew up in Michigan, and was excited to return to the state to work at Oakland Township Parks and Recreation in 2014 after earning in my PhD in Biology at Kansas State University.

As an ecologist and professional land manager, I am enthusiastic about scientifically-informed, public-involved conservation, restoration, and habitat management. I am passionate about working to conserve natural areas to preserve biodiversity and improve the quality of life for people. I have broad experience and training in ecological management, prescribed burning, botanical surveys, invasive species control, teaching, and communicating science to diverse audiences.

During my time at Oakland Township Parks and Recreation I revitalized the natural areas stewardship program (with support from township officials, staff and amazing volunteers, of course!). I've planted ambitious prairie restoration projects, leveraged our Land Preservation millage to bring in grant funding, launched a popular nature website (www.oaklandnaturalareas.com), increased education and outreach to township residents, and developed the volunteer program.

I've also been a resource to other conservation organizations in Oakland County. I volunteer with Six Rivers Land Conservancy on their Stewardship Committee, where I was recognized as their 2018 Volunteer of the Year.

As a member of the Executive Committee of the Oakland County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (OC CISMA), I led the effort to apply for two grants from Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program. I am proud that my efforts helped CISMA win $60,000 and $100,000 grants to hire a full-time coordinator and expand outreach efforts throughout the county. I also led the effort through the Oakland County CISMA to treat invasive Phragmites along our roads in 2018, increasing public safety and our natural areas.

My wife and I currently live near Lake Orion, where we enjoy exploring local parks and gardening.

The information presented here was accurate as of January 1, 2019.
