Dr. Kennetha S. Mentor earned her B.S. Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology and her M.S. Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned her Doctor of Clinical Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah. Dr. Mentor has over 13 years of experience as an ASHA (American Speech Language and Hearing Association) Certified and Michigan State Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. She has worked with the pediatric, adult, and geriatric population in the following settings: in-patient rehab, acute care, outpatient, and skilled nursing facilities. Dr. Mentor’s areas of expertise include adult neuro-rehabilitation, adult dysphagia, and pediatric speech and language disorders. She is currently a Speech-Language Pathologist at Beaumont Health and Wellness Center in Royal Oak, Michigan.
She has conducted extensive research and presented best evidenced-based practice for adults with neurological disorders at local and national conventions. She recently received the “Clinician of the Year” Award from the Michigan Speech Language Hearing Association for her compassion, respect, knowledge, and continued commitment to providing the best evidence-based care for her patients. She enjoys collaborating with her patients and their families to help them reach their goals. She lives by the motto, “If I can help somebody, then my living shall not be in vain.” Dr. Mentor is a member of the ASHA STEP Mentoring Program, which connects self-motivated students with experienced mentors in meaningful, one-to-one mentoring relationships. She has mentored speech pathology students across the country in undergraduate and graduate programs.
She is an active community leader, advocate for appropriate education for all children, and mentor to high school and college students. She currently serves as the First Vice-President for the local chapter of her sorority. It is her responsibility to Chair the Program Planning and Development Committee. This encompasses leadership abilities to govern 22 subcommittees. Dr. Mentor has also served on numerous committees within the sorority, including, Physical and Mental Health, Delta Academy-(chair of the committee for 2 years), and Scholarship. She was awarded “Soror of the Year” by her peers in 2017. She has also volunteered with local agencies including nursing homes, Gleaners Food Bank, and Forgotten Harvest.
She is a national speaker and educator for communication enhancement for professionals. Dr. Mentor has received numerous awards and special recognitions in her profession and community. She is a member and holds leadership positions in the following professional and service organizations: ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association), NBASLH (National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing), MSHA (Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association), ASHA STEP Mentoring Program, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Dr. Mentor is the mother of two beautiful daughters, Cydney-Cy’mone and Ava. She enjoys spending time with her children, volunteering at their school, traveling, shopping, scrapbooking, and exercising. Dr. Mentor has completed multiple half marathons across the country as well as multiple 5ks. Her favorite event is the Woodward Dream Cruise 5k down Woodward Ave in Royal Oak, Michigan. She is looking forward to having her daughters participate in the 5k next year. Dr. Mentor is a leader, mentor, trailblazer, and friend. She continues to strive for excellence and encourages others to take the same just stand.
