The words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. resonate with Melissa Williams-Bowman: “I have always believed that we are all in an inescapable network of mutuality.”

As an epidemiologist in the communicable disease unit at the Oakland County Health Division, she protects communities from disease outbreaks while educating on transmittable diseases.

Williams-Bowman directed the campaign to stop the spread of shigella bacteria in a local preschool. During COVID-19 pandemic she played a key role in updating Oakland County officials and residents on the latest information, tracking positive COVID test results and deaths, advising health care systems on patients and assessing classroom exposures.

As a lecturer, she develops course content for public health classes at Oakland University in the School of Health Sciences and was the first to teach the course on chronic, infectious diseases.

A resident of Sylvan Lake, Williams-Bowman earned her bachelor’s degree from Oakland University and her master’s degree from Michigan State University.
