Board of Commissioners seeking nominations for 2026 Black Excellence Award

Post Date:01/08/2026 1:55 PM

January 8, 2026, OAKLAND COUNTY, MI. – The Oakland County Board of Commissioners is seeking nominations for its 2026 Black Excellence Award. In honor of Black History Month, commissioners will be acknowledging outstanding Black residents of Oakland County who have taken strides to improve the community, made notable achievements or are otherwise worthy of recognition. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 23, 2026.

“It is an honor to continue the Black Excellence Award celebration for the fifth year in a row,” Commissioner Angela Powell (D-Pontiac) said. “Recognizing the many ways these residents support and uplift the community is a reminder of Oakland County’s strength and diversity.”

The Board is accepting living nominees of all ages and backgrounds. They must be residents of Oakland County, and they can be well-established or unsung heroes. Individuals must be nominated by someone other than themselves.

“Learning about the ways in which our residents assist their neighbors and all of Oakland County reinforces an appreciation for unique talents and perspectives,” Commissioner Yolanda Smith Charles (D-Southfield) said. “These individuals work hard to enhance the lives around them and contribute to the solidarity of our community.”

To nominate a Black Oakland County resident for the award, community members can complete the submission form at bit.ly/BOCBEA2026. Nominators are also encouraged to email supporting documentation (such as a CV/résumé, news article, link to a professional portfolio, etc.) to JoassinM@OakGov.com with the nominee's name in the subject line. The deadline for submissions is noon on Friday, January 23, 2026.

“Contributions to the well-being of those around us come in many different forms, and it is humbling to see that actions both large and small can make an impact,” Commissioner Linnie Taylor (D-Southfield) said. “Community members are encouraged to nominate an individual who is making a difference here in Oakland County.”

Those selected will be notified of the award on or around February 2. They will be invited to attend the full Board of Commissioners meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, where they will be publicly announced as a winner and receive their recognition.
