Pontiac, Mich. – Oakland County’s Department of Economic Development is inviting residents, business owners, nonprofits and community partners to take part in two in-person workshops that will help shape the future of the county’s tourism economy and destination brand.

These workshops are the next step in the county’s effort to develop a comprehensive Tourism & Attraction Strategic Plan, building on extensive public engagement, including a countywide visitor survey launched in March, and focus groups. Participants will be asked to contribute ideas and feedback on how to build a more inclusive, vibrant and sustainable visitor economy that benefits all communities in Oakland County.

Workshop Details:

  • Monday, June 16, 6–8 p.m., Sundquist Pavilion in Riley Park, 33113 Grand River Ave., Farmington. Click here to register.
  • Tuesday, June 17, 9–11 a.m., Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 1005 Van Hoosen Rd., Rochester Hills. Click here to register.

Participants are encouraged to review the Tourism Diagnostic Report in advance, which reflects insights from more than 120 industry interviews, several focus groups, and more than 1,800 survey responses.

In 2024, Oakland County attracted over 16.7 million visitors who spent more than $3.3 billion in the county, averaging $9 million in daily spending. Visitor activity supported 24,456 local jobs and generated $1.4 billion in income. Tourism generated tax revenue of $426 million.

Ninety-nine percent of visitors who completed a tourism survey said they would return, citing positive experiences across retail, culture and outdoor recreation.

Key destinations highlighted in the report include the Detroit Zoo, Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, Pine Knob, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Main Street Oakland County’s vibrant and walkable downtowns.

The final strategy and destination brand will be unveiled this fall. The completed plan will include steps to enhance visitor experiences, strengthen cross-sector partnerships, improve mobility, and amplify Oakland County’s regional and national visibility.
