AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - On Thursday, July 18, 2024, Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD charged Zahir Hashim Abdul Aziz, a 20-year-old resident of Auburn Hills, with Carjacking, Attempted Carjacking, Reckless Driving, and Driving with a Suspended/Revoked/Denied License.

These charges are in connection with an incident that occurred on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in an Auburn Hills parking lot off of South Opdyke Rd. The victim was driving through the lot when it is alleged that the defendant waved her down as if he needed help. The defendant then threw the victim out of her vehicle and a struggle ensued. The defendant took the victim's vehicle, striking two vehicles in the lot as he left, ultimately fleeing on foot after he crashed the vehicle. The defendant was apprehended and taken into custody. Prior to this carjacking, the defendant allegedly attempted to carjack a different vehicle, but was not successful.

"This defendant put the victim and everyone in the area in danger, and this could have been much worse," stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "Combating violent crime is my top priority, and those who pose a threat to public safety will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The defendant was arraigned on July 19, 2024, in the 52-3 District Court before Magistrate Karen Holt. The Court set bond at $50,000, no 10%.

Carjacking is a felony punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years and requires DNA to be taken upon arrest. Attempted Carjacking is a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment and requires DNA to be taken upon request. Reckless Driving is a misdemeanor punishable by 93 days in jail and/or up to a $500 fine. Driving with a Suspended/Revoked/Denied License is a misdemeanor punishable by 93 days in jail and/or up to a $500 fine.

Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
