FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD charged Malik Ali Smith, a 20-year-old resident of Farmington Hills, with Assault with Intent to Murder.

On Friday, March 1, 2024, around 10:45 am, it is alleged that the defendant and the victim exchanged words inside the locker room of a YMCA. A witness then heard a physical altercation and went to see what was happening. The witness observed the victim, an 80-year-old man, slumped over the counter. It is alleged the defendant then slammed the victim’s head into the counter. The witness intervened and pulled the defendant away from the victim. The defendant then fled the YMCA but was located by law enforcement and taken into custody. The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

"This was a vicious, senseless attack," stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "I commend the witness who intervened, and we will seek justice for this victim."

The defendant was arraigned on March 2, 2024, in the 47th District Court before Magistrate Michael Sawicky. The Court set bond at $250,000 cash/surety, no 10%. A Probable Cause Conference is set for March 13, 2024, at 1:30 pm before Judge Marla Parker. The defendant remains in custody at the Oakland County Jail.

Assault with Intent to Murder is a felony punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years.

Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
