Most job growth in Oakland County will be in the fields of Health Care, Information Technology and Advanced Manufacturing. Skilled Trades demand is among the highest in the nation. Find out ways to learn certain trades and decide what types of training will work best for you.

Certifications and licenses often can be obtained in less than a year. Many skilled trades can be learned through apprenticeships or short-term training. Tuition assistance also may be available. Some training programs even offer college credits. Vocational schools, career colleges and technical schools can save you money and time when compared to earning a two or four year degree.

State Launches Michigan Reconnect Program Offering Free Tuition to Eligible Adults

The new Michigan Reconnect program provides eligible adults with the opportunity to earn a tuition-free associate degrees or skills certificates at their local, in-district community colleges or select private training schools.

The goal is to help people prepare for in-demand careers in manufacturing, construction, information technology, health care and business management. This program is directly aligned with Oakand80 program and its objective of having 80 percent of the adults in Oakland County obtain a post-secondary degree or credential by 2030.

Michigan Reconnect Information Night at Schoolcraft College

Are you age 21+? You may qualify for free tuition with Michigan Reconnect.

We will be available to answer questions and walk you through the steps to:

  • Apply for Admissions at Schoolcraft College
  • Apply for Michigan Reconnect
  • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

After you register to attend the workshop, you will receive an email with further details about the information you will need to bring with you.

To be eligible for Reconnect, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Lived in Michigan for a year or more
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent, or certificate of completion
  • Have not completed a college degree (associate or bachelor’s)
  • Complete the FAFSA
