Wireless Oakland Demonstration a Success

More than 2000 visitors stopped by the Wireless Oakland internet cafe over Labor Day Weekend to check out the free wireless (wi-fi) network built for the event. The network was designed, built and fully funded by Michtel Communications, LLC.  Visitors surfed the web, checked e-mail and registered online for one of four iPod shuffles given away throughout the weekend.

In addition to the 10 computers in use in the internet cafe, dozens of people connected their own laptops and other devices to the network throughout the weekend. Visitors who logged into the network were surfing the web at 512 Kbps.

The Demonstration Project was a kick-off of the Wireless Oakland project goal to blanket all of Oakland County with wireless internet, with a portion of the bandwidth available for free to everyone in the county.  In June, 13 private sector companies responded to a request for qualifications to build the network.  The Wireless Oakland Project Team will announce its selection of private sector partner(s) and pilot communities in early October.
