What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
Household hazardous waste is the unwanted or unusable portion of consumer products that contain substances that can harm human health or the environment. Unlike hazardous wastes from industry, hazardous wastes from households are not regulated. Most households can identify at least a few products as hazardous. Leftover household cleaners, paint, pesticides, batteries and prescription medicines are just a few. These types of common, but hazardous products are used every day. They have made our modern lives easier, but they can also be toxic to our health and our environment -- when we use them and when we throw them away.

What Happens to the Collected Household Hazardous Waste?
All HHW collected is handled by a household hazardous waste vendor in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. Depending on the material type, some items are recycled, some are used as energy recovery (blended and used as fuel) and some are disposed of in a hazardous waste landfill.
