Mr. Cornell was from Pontiac, MI. He was stationed aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Selfridge. He was killed in the battle of Vella Lavella. He was killed when a torpedo from a Japanese destroyer struck the Selfridge's port side. Thirteen crewmembers were killed, eleven wounded and thirty-six missing. His niece says that his mother never accepted the fact that he was dead since his body was never recovered.
