Job Closing Statement
This is a continuous examination, and applications will be accepted until such time as there are sufficient applicants to meet the County's current recruitment needs. As such, interested persons should make application promptly. Applicants will be tested in groups as they apply. Successful applicants, regardless of their testing date, will be ranked on the eligible list based on their final examination scores. The original rank of persons on the eligible list may change as later applicants are tested and added to the list. Notice of the last date to apply for this examination will be posted in the Human Resources Department and on this posting one week prior to the application deadline. Applications will not be accepted after the posted closing date.
Description of Work
Under general supervision as a Deputy Sheriff appointed by the Oakland County Sheriff, performs duties within the Corrections or on occasion Road Patrol areas. As a Deputy I in the Corrections area, performs routine security and custody activities. Assists in maintaining and enforcing procedures and regulations to ensure security is maintained at the jail and satellite facilities. Distributes meals, bedding and supplies to inmates. Screens visitors, issues passes and ensures visitation regulations are maintained. Transports inmates to authorized facilities, ensuring that security procedures are followed. Physically restrains individuals as necessary. May, at times, perform certain Deputy II functions in limited instances. When assigned to the Road Patrol area, responds to less serious response/complaint calls. Responds to emergency life threatening calls only in situations where a Deputy II is not available. Enforces local community ordinances. Provides assistance for traffic accidents and for traffic control. May be assigned to work at desk dealing with walk in complaints in substations and other Sheriff's installations. Shift assignments include some weekend work. Work shifts generally run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., although other shifts may be assigned to ensure efficient department operations.
Qualifications
At the time of application, applicants must:
1. Must be at least 18 years old and be a United States Citizen.
2. Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test; AND
3. a. Have successfully completed police academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards, MCOLES) and be able to be licensed as a police officer at the time of application; OR
b. At the time of application have successfully passed the MCOLES pre-test and possess current valid pre-test scores as prescribed in the Pre Test Information Booklet
4. Have no prior felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis to determine qualifying status. Domestic violence convictions are basis for automatically disqualifying.
5. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
6. Have at least corrected 20/20 vision in each eye, normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.
7. Have normal hearing in each ear.
Special Features or Conditions
A background investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, criminal, military, or other personal records. This information will be reviewed by the Sheriff Department before an applicant can be appointed. Fingerprinting and drug testing are part of the evaluation process. Information obtained during the background investigation and drug testing will be considered in the hiring decision. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.
Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and firearms qualification.
Must attend and pass the earliest available corrections academy training session scheduled by the Sheriff Department.
