Boot Camp

Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Satellite Services Division

Oakland County Boot CampSee also: Boot Camp -- Frequently Asked Questions

The Boot Camp originated in 1990 to allow certain pre-qualified inmates (court-ordered) to participate in an eight-week program that provides for a reduction in a sentence, which does not exceed one year.  In 2006, the Transitional Options Program (T.O.P.), which is up to a 3 week aftercare prgram, was implemented.

Also known as the Regimented Inmate Discipline Program (RIDP), the Boot Camp is designed to house non-assaultive felons in a military-style environment, stressing intense discipline, coupled with substance abuse counseling, employability skills, GED completion, CPR/first aid training and physical fitness.

The T.O.P. program is up to an additional 21 days after completion of Boot Camp.  Graduates with a release date prior to the 21 days are not required to stay in the T.O.P. program past their release date.  The purpose of the T.O.P. program is to help Boot Camp graduates successfully reintegrate back into the community by providing educational, employment, and life management skill services.  The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has teamed up with the JobLink Career Center to provide Boot Camp graduates with career counseling, job skills, and educational enhancement classes as well as resume building and help with a job search.

Since the establishment of the RIDP in 1990, the Program has graduated 2,600 participants and saved the taxpayers of Oakland County during the operation of this sentence reduction program, the excess of $18 million.

The Boot Camp is in the process of developing a job bank for inmates who successfully complete the program.  Special tax incentives are available to employers who hire ex-offenders. Employers who are interested in participating should contact the Boot Camp at (248) 391-0004.

Boot Camp supervisors and instructors pride themselves on the opportunity to give inmates a new start in life.
