Training Unit

Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Law Enforcement Services

The Sheriff's Office Training Unit is responsible for the development, planning, scheduling, and maintenance of all in-service and off-site law enforcement related instruction.

Designated to cover the educational needs of the Sheriff's Office, the Training Unit is divided into two separate systems to cover the training of certified officers and non-certified/civilian personnel.  A strong "in-house" instructional staff, combined with specialized on-site/off-site vendor training, provides members of the Sheriff's Office with the best information available in the various topics facing staff.

The Training Unit maintains records and/or oversees the following departmental functions.

  1. The State-Certified Corrections Academy (In-house training for newly hired officers)
  2. The Field Training Officers program (Both Corrections and Patrol)
  3. The Firearms Range (handgun, shotgun, rifle, "TASER", baton & pepper spray, Firearms Training System ["FATS"] instruction)
  4. The Police Academy (State of Michigan - Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards -M.C.O.L.E.S. licensing process)
  5. All In-Service Training Courses (mandated & non-mandated)
  6. All Off-Site Training Courses
  7. State & local training fund expenditures
  8. Student Intern & ride-along programs
  9. Database management of all Sheriff's employees and related statistics
  10. Training resource management (equipment, classroom use, video library)
  11. Concealed weapons permits and their approval
  12. Emergency deployment of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and training for this process

During the year 2010, 5 officers attended Basic Police Training at the Oakland Police Academy at Oakland Community College.  State and local training funds expended for M.C.O.L.E.S. certified employees totaled $94,093.  The Corrective Services Division expended $9,811; $87,867 came from the H.R. training fund while $109,700 came from various training budgets and other grants.

The goal of the Training Unit is to continue offering departmental personnel the highest level of instructional opportunities.
