Like the senior citizens depicted in Disney World commercials going down a giant slide or dancing under the stars with fireworks in the background, senior center members are having more fun and adventure than their children might imagine.
The senior centers of today go way beyond our traditional image of bingo and congregate meals. Some folks would prefer Tai Chi classes and trips to Europe. Every edition we will highlight exciting news about Oakland County senior centers.
Most folks have heard about their local center and may know where it is. You might not be aware that we have 61 senior centers in our county alone! Here's some of the latest news:
Front entrance of the nearly completed Older Persons' Center in Rochester
Over in Rochester at the Older Persons' Center great things are happening. They are in the midst of building a brand new 90,000 square foot center due to open late October or early November. With sidewalks that melt for safety and an area that looks much like an airport hangar where buses can pull into the building to drop off passengers, this is a state of the art facility! Areas for yoga and meditation, an Olympic sized pool with a walking track and an outdoor cafe are just some of the features which promise to add quality of life for Rochester seniors. It is wonderful to see the support that the Rochester community gives to its seniors along with the capable leadership provided by the very dedicated Marye Miller, Director of the OPC. Their phone number is 248-656-1403.
In Bloomfield Township the Greater Bloomfield Senior Association, under the direction of Chris Tavaroha, has just completed a Strategic Planning Committee, which met for the first six months of 2003. One of the recommendations that resulted was a name change for Mature Minglers. Their new name is the Greater Bloomfield Senior Association. They will also be taking a look at ways in which they can update their services and facilities to meet the new challenges and opportunities resulting from the "age wave." If you have further questions, you can reach them at 248-341-6450.
