Lynn Alexander, Senior Citizen CoordinatorWith the "age wave" soon to hit our population, senior issues are attracting everyone's attention like never before. Senior issues are also family issues and community issues. Experts are predicting that the senior population in America will double by the year 2030.

The fastest growing population group even today is the 85+ age group. With the latest medical technology and prevention programs, people are living longer than they ever expected, and the baby boomers are reaching senior status.

The good news
is that seniors are now to live to see their grandchildren, and in some cases, great grandchildren, graduate from college and get married. There are many opportunities for leisure and recreation so that seniors can fully enjoy their retirement years and remain engaged in life. The challenge inherent in all of this good news is maintaining quality of life. The impact of chronic disease, the cost of prescription drugs, the recent globalization of families along with long distance care-giving, and the need to stretch retirement savings further are just some of the challenges that seniors need to address as they experience the journey called longevity.

Just as with most situations in life, these challenge are best addressed by:
  • careful planning
  • having a good support system available
  • open communication with family members, and
  • having access to needed resources
