Teen Court
This innovative program within the Oakland County Prosecutor's Juvenile Division is designed for juvenile offenders who have committed a minor violation of the law, have already admitted responsibility for their actions, and have no prior juvenile court record.
Successful completion of all sentence requirements results in the avoidance of a court record/conviction by the juvenile.
Teen Court proceedings are overseen by an Oakland County Circuit Judge and utilize trained high school students in the roles of prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, bailiff, court clerk and jurors.
After considering persuasive presentations by the teen prosecutor and teen defense attorney, the teen jurors determine what sentence will be imposed.
Sentence conditions may include performing community service, financial reimbursement to the victim for damages, making a written or oral apology, obtaining counseling, writing an essay, or performing future Teen Court jury duty on another case.
Nationwide statistical data reveal that juvenile offenders who have successfully completed Teen Court programs maintain a low recidivism rate.
