Child Sexual Assault Section

The Child Sexual Assault Section is a unit of the Circuit Court Division. This section identifies and prosecutes defendants who sexually assault children and strives to minimize the trauma of court proceedings for child victims.

The five assistant prosecutors and social worker in the section initially work with CARE House, where a multi-discovery team of professionals observe an interview of the child victim.

At the conclusion of the interview, team members discuss whether there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the offender, or if further investigation is needed.

Once a prosecution has started, prosecutors in this section assist victims and their families in preparing for court both in a one-on-one format and through a structured court orientation program that familiarizes them with the courtroom and its procedures.

Prosecution is "vertical" so that a child is assured of dealing with the same prosecutor through the entire legal process: from preliminary examination to hearings, trial or plea and sentencing.

This section combines aggressive prosecution and sensitivity to the special needs of the child victims and their families to protect the children of Oakland County.

The assistant prosecutors assigned to the Child Sexual Assault Section receive extensive specialized training in the prosecution of these cases.
