Downtown Highland

Downtown Highland is located on the western border of Oakland County astride M-59, the major east-west highway.

Mission: Preserving the past, with a vision of the future.

Description: Downtown Highland is a semi-rural community in northwest Oakland County that includes commercial and retail businesses along Milford and Livingston Roads, the historic Highland Station area and a new Civic Center complex which includes a recently constructed Township Library. Highland has a rich heritage as an agricultural and lumbering community and was founded in 1835. The railroad was a shaping influence on the community, providing cheap transportation for abundant lumber, and providing a means for the pickling factories to ship their products to market. But the main attraction of the community was, and still is, the beautiful rolling hills, woodlands and many recreational lakes that make for a pleasant surrounding for vacation cottages and homes. Highland's DDA/Main Street Program is working with Highland Township officials and local agencies to design and promote themselves as the first equestrian friendly downtown in Michigan.
